For $49, you can use Elements for months within a family or a small business. You can use it for your own family office. I have not found a better program for what I want to do. The bit size decrease is due to the size of the previews. And if you go into the preferences of the workspace you set the # of thumbnails to display.
One thing you can do is to bring down the amount of space by going to File & Optimize. With the workspace open click on Edit Backgrounds & Footer. You can make it even smaller. I have no idea why that isn’t an option during export.
Another you can do with the workspace open is click on the red x on the bottom right, the workspace will close and the workspace on your desktop will open. This will get you back to the original workspace that was open. The workspace that was open may have a few unstored edits and if you import that the workspace is updated. But the original unedited image is still where it was before.
To use the workspace on your desktop, when the workspace opens navigate the tabs until you find what you want to use.
